What to expect with your first visit:

When you arrive at our offices, you will be asked to complete a health history form that your massage therapist will carefully review with you. The therapist will ask a series of questions to ascertain your general health, and inquire about specific conditions or issues you may be experiencing at the time. Simple movement tests may be incorporated into this interview, to evaluate your condition, and a course of treatment will be recommended appropriate to your individual needs.

Following the interview, you will be shown to a clean, private room where you can disrobe and get comfortable on the massage table, beneath the drape that is provided. When you are ready, your massage therapist will join you. Many patients close their eyes and relax completely during the session; some prefer to talk as the massage progresses. Our therapists respect your choices and will follow your lead in order to make your treatment as pleasant and relaxing as possible. If you have questions, please ask! We are dedicated to making your visit an enjoyable, positive, healthful experience, and will do everything we can do to further that goal.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: What are the benefits to massage therapy?
A: Massage therapy will help reduce and/or relieve:

  • Inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and tendonitis
  • Stress relief and associated conditions (headaches and migraines, muscle tension, etc.)
  • Muscle pain and related conditions (strains, sprains, spasms, etc.)
  • Back pain
  • Repetitive motion strain or injury
  • Circulatory and respiratory problems
  • Pregnancy and labor discomfort
  • Post-injury and post-surgical rehabilitation

Q: What should I wear for the appointment?
A: Depending on the specific techniques your therapist will use, you may or may not need to undress. For a full-body massage, most people undress completely, but many choose to wear underwear. Your therapist will give you privacy to undress, and you will be covered with a sheet and blanket at all times, except for the specific area being worked on.

Q: Will the massage lotions or oils cause my skin to break out?
A: Our massage therapists use hypo-allergenic massage oils and lotions. However, some individuals are sensitive to certain types of oils or lotions. If this is the case for you, please mention it to your therapist, as we do offer a variety of alternatives.

Q: Will there be pain at my visit?
A: This depends on the techniques used and the condition of your body at the time of the massage. As with many treatments affecting the soft tissue, there are times when massage therapy can cause some minor discomfort, but this is not harmful and our therapists are always careful to first develop a comfort scale with you, in order to work to your specific tolerance levels. Any temporary discomfort will diminish and no technique of this nature is used without the therapist first discussing it fully with you and obtaining permission to proceed. You may stop or adjust the treatment at any time and our massage therapists will gladly modify their techniques to meet your needs.

Q: Will I be able to drive home after my appointment?
A: Yes, but you may feel very relaxed from the session, and your reflexes may slow temporarily. We recommend that you allow your body enough time to recover before driving. If you find that you become extremely sleepy after a massage, we recommend bringing someone with you to drive you home. We also offer in-home visits, which many of our patients prefer, as it allows them to relax completely and gain full benefit from the session.
